It might seem that vertical jumping is not critical to success in baseball. Can you run? Are you quick? Do you have good hands? How are you with the bat? These are more pertinent issues often for baseball players. But vertical jumping is a good reflection of your speed. Leg strength, and the ability to call on it in a hurry, reflect the player's ability to call on his power immediately when needed. The center fielder needs to be able to explode at the sound of the bat hitting the ball. His vertical jumping ability will have a direct impact on his response.
